Tetrachromacy

I thought that Squant was a joke… But apparently a woman with the right combination of X chromosome genes would in theory be able to see a fourth channel of color in addition to the usual red, green and blue — a tetrachromat instead of a normal trichromat. She would have two distinct “red” (or “green”) channels, and normal green (or red) and blue channels. That woman wouldn’t even know about her ability, but would probably be extra good at telling colors apart or at matching them. And who knows… maybe one day tetrachromats can have monitors made for them that are capable of displaying Squant after all.

  1. Studying daltonism in tetrachromats would be a cool exercise in futility :)

  3. Are you strongly daltonian?

Every time I think about how people perceive things differently, I wonder how to define reality. “What is ‘real’? How do you define ‘real’? If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then ‘real’ is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.” dixit Morpheus.

If reality however exists on another level, and we just interpret whatever perceptible ripples it sends our way, there is the disturbing issue that, ironically, *no one has ever actually experienced reality*. This makes you wonder whether reality is then a useful concept.

  5. I’m a daltonian tetrachromat, yes. I can only see one type each of red and green.

As far as I’m concerned, what’s real to me is real. I’m pretty indifferent to what anybody else might really be experiencing. I’m pretty indifferent to whether or not anybody else actually exists or not. I’m just going to go around assuming that they do, and I’m content with that. Also, I try not to go much deeper than that with epistemology when I have cost accounting to study.

  7. I really couldn’t be indifferent to this, even if I wanted to. Plato’s allegory of the cave is something that could hold my attention almost indefinitely.

  9. My first year of university put me off of the allegory of the cave completely. Something about the intrinsic chairness that a chair possesses.

    Chairisimilitude.

Plato was an alright fellow, though. Or, um… Socrates was. Or something.

Possesses, by the way, is a word with altogether too many essesssss.

  11. it’s not theory anymore a case was found awhile back.
the woman could see very subtle differences in color.
    it’s real.

  13. Sometimes i wonder if i could in fact see colours that others could not. Sometimes it was the haze that for others blended into the sky, seeing the stove getting red before anyone elce or seeing some bright colour in between the rainbow that my family thought was just my imagination. Do you find that computer’s seem to blink? I tell people that the screen is blinking and they tell me im mental. lol. Anyways just throwing random questions out there.
